Blue Spring Boat Launch
Ah, the quieter side of Blue Spring State Park, phew!
OK, you've been into the main part of Blue Spring State Park to see the manatees, and every third person in Florida was there with you. It's been fun, but all the action has made you a bit nutty, and you're ready to leave all this human nature behind for the wilderness kind.
As we reported on the last page, on the day of our visit the park was thoroughly full of happy manatee watchers, picnickers, touch football games and so on. As we were leaving we saw a line of cars outside that seemed to indicate new visitors wouldn't be allowed into the park until somebody else left to make room for them.

Amidst all this merry madness we stumbled upon a quiet little corner of the park that you too may enjoy.
As you pass the entrance booth on your way out of Blue Spring State Park you'll immediately encounter an intersection where you must turn either left or right.

If you turn right you're headed back towards U.S. 17-92, the main drag through town. If you instead turn left, a mile or so later you'll find yourself at a quiet little boat launch where you can let out a deep breath and have a more private wilderness experience.
There were only 5 or 6 cars in the parking lot when we arrived, and most of them belonged to boat owners who had already launched their boat and headed out on the river. A couple of folks sat on 5 gallon buckets on the bank and did a bit of lazy afternoon fishing from shore.

If you have a boat, canoe or kayak, then of course you can put into the St. Johns River here and explore the vicinity. There's a swamp island just across the river from the boat launch that looked worth an inspection. As best we could tell the whole area here is wild and undeveloped. A few boats on the river, but no houses or other buildings that we could see from shore.
Or, if you don't have a boat with you, you could rent a canoe within the park, and then canoe about a half mile up the river to this boat launch for a picnic under the palm trees along the shore.

We were delighted to find a quiet wilderness area so close to the more popular sections of the park.
On future visits to Blue Spring State Park we'll get out on the water, and hike the trails, and bring you further photos and descriptions.
