The Moon Is Shrinking
Geologic features discovered on the moon suggest it is shrinking as it ages and cools.
Scarps are geologic features created when land on one side of a fault is thrust upward.
A scarp usually has a steep face on the front side, and then gradually slopes off on the back.
Apollo missions had found scarps near the moon's equator, and now NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has found scarps at a variety of other locations.
The theory is that as the interior of the moon cools, the surface of the moon has to adjust to the reduced volume of the core, creating scarps.
Scientists estimate the moon has shrunk about 600 feet in width since it's creation.
Shrinkage of the moon is expected to slow as the interior of the moon cools.
